Cllr Luke Allan Holmes has urged the newly elected North East Mayor, to prioritise the reopening of the Leamside Line, an essential transportation route that would alleviate congestion on the East Coast Main Line and improve connectivity throughout Durham and the North East region.
The Leamside Line would provide a crucial diversionary route for the East Coast Main Line, thereby freeing up space for both freight and passenger trains through Durham. This would allow an increase in the frequency of stopping services at Durham, supporting the local tourism industry and enhancing accessibility to the county's cultural offerings.
Luke, the former Business Development Director at Bishop Trains, brings his extensive experience in the railway industry to his candidacy. His first job was working in the railway station ticket office at Bishop Auckland station, providing him with a deep understanding of the region's transport needs.
In a statement, Luke emphasised the importance of integrated transportation and enhanced connectivity:
"Reopening the Leamside Line is just the first step to improving rail services in the North East. We need to create a comprehensive, efficient, and modern transport network that will benefit commuters, tourists, and businesses alike. We need to be forward-thinking in our approach to transport infrastructure if Durham is to become a thriving business hub in the North East."
Luke believes that the Leamside Line is a vital part of a wider strategy to enhance connectivity in the region and support economic growth. By committing to the reopening of this line, the North East Mayor can pave the way for sustainable development and increased investment in Durham and the surrounding areas.
